FUNctional Hockey's Summer Day Camp for Girls |
| Instruction for the Developmental Group will be station-based and geared toward mastery of the skills fundamental to the game of hockey with an added emphasis on learning how to "think" and use your skill-set in game-like situations. Instruction for the Elite Group will be focus on refining the fundamental skills and taking them to the next level using a high-tempo, high-flow drill philosophy. High-tempo drills allow players to execute offensive and defensive skills at a game-like pace, thereby developing a hockey-specific training effect. High flow drills elicit game-like responses, ensure maximum player participation, and create a higher quality and quantity of repetitions for optimal skill development. Our highly skilled female staff will demonstrate drills at an NCAA pace and then break down the drills using step-by-step skill progressions providing players with visual cues and feedback they can use for imitation, repetition, and reinforcement. The end-goal is gaining an understanding of what it takes to play at the collegiate and national team levels. |

| The Girls Hockey Summer camp is designed and directed by Bruce Turpin and Carla Pentimone. We believe in creating an innovative and progressive training environment that emphasizes complete player development. The On-Ice Program will stress both technical and tactical skill development. Technical instruction will focus on improving the fundamental skills of the game (skating, passing, shooting, puck handling). Tactical instruction will build up your “hockey sense”; by teaching the concept of width, depth, space and time, as well as your offensive and defensive group tactics and read and react skills. The addition of small area games will provide an opportunity to learn the game in a fun, creative and competitive atmosphere while reinforcing the skills of puck protection and puck possession and emphasizing the transitional nature of the game. This environment will force players to learn how to read and react to various offensive and defensive situations in small areas and at a higher intensity. Players will also be exposed to position specific drills and teaching sessions that will systematically break down the skills and responsibilities of their respective position (forward, defense or goaltender). Specialized goaltending instruction will be offered. Coaches will employ step-by-step progressions through creative, demanding drills that focus on the finer points of positional play, leading up to specific game situations. Classroom Instruction will encompass a wide range of topics pertinent to becoming a successful hockey player and student athlete (nutrition, strength and conditioning, goal-setting, etc...). Dryland Training will focus on the ABCs (AgilityBalanceCoreStrengthSpeed) along with hockey skill progressions using the same principles being applied at the NCAA and National Team levels. From our perspective, functional training for the game of hockey should center around flow and tempo. The ability to apply your skill base in the context of the game (ie. the development of “hockey sense”) is the core ingredient to becoming a successful hockey player. |
