OBJECTIVES The Masters of Defense Clinic is designed to instruct players in the fundamentals necessary for become a better defenseman. Defensemen are the anchor of a good hockey team, yet most coaches and instructors do not provide adequate instruction on the skill set needed to play this difficult, yet essential, position. This clinic will systematically break down the skills and responsibilities of playing defense and help you master the intricacies of our unique position. We will stress both technical and tactical development using a step-by-step progression through drills that focus on the finer points of playing defense, leading up to specific game situations. You will also be taught the art of using your stick as a defensive tool. To be more specific, we will help you master: Backward Skating with a focus on lateral movement, explosiveness and pivoting Shooting as a defenseman and learning how to block shots Becoming a more effective passer (communication, presentation and the creation of passing angles) Playing Defensive Situations - pressure vs. contain, reading/playing the attack and the art of gap control Breakout Options and how to read the forecheck Supporting Your Partner (both offensively and defensively) |
